The Tree Maker was contacted by a customer many years ago wanting to display their family group records or family genealogy record if you will. They had bought a 9-gen fan chart from us then filled it out like these four examples show. The customer asked us if we could create this type of record for their family lines. We said that we could and we have been doing these ever since. What a great way to track family genealogy records. Keeping a family group record this way is easy. You can also add a blazon of arms to your chart. Heraldry is something of a hobby to us and we would love to create your family coat of arms or crest and show it on a cousin’s chart.

Cousins Charts used as a Family Group Record / Family Genealogy Record

By using our 9-generation fan charts as a family group record or family genealogy record if you will. You decide where to put each family name; we are able to show the siblings, cousins, aunts, and uncles for most families. Customers design the layout of his or her chart, from their own family record. This means you end up with a beautiful family group record using a layout of your own unique design. Free pedigree chart if needed. You can also keep track of your entire family genealogy with the services of Ancestry.com. They offer a Free Trial and is a great way to search for other family names.

Charts for Family Group Records and Family Genealogy Records

We call this our “Family Group Record / Relationship Chart”. All of these examples can show the birth year and death year if there is room. The cousin’s chart can display a coat of arms and other information from your family genealogy with some restrictions. However there are some families that are very large, and will not fit on this type of family group chart.

We call this one our “Family Genealogy Record / Cousin’s Organizational Chart”. Our cousin charts are very popular, and can go back as far as 4 or 5 generations. Your family genealogy records will be displayed with an elegant calligraphy. This one shows the family surname history in the corner of the organizational chart.

Family Reunion Gift Idea Using Our Cousins Chart

This type of cousin’s chart would make a great “Family Reunion Gift”. This chart was designed by a customer to fit their genealogy records, and took it to their family reunion. It was used as a gift for others in the family. It was a big hit and everyone wanted a copy. It shows the two coats of arms and two surname histories for the great-grand parents who can be found in the center circle.

This chart is a fantastic “Family Reunion Idea”. In this case it showed the picture of each of the two main Great-Grandparents in the corners. We were told that it was the talk of the whole family reunion. The Tree Maker goes to great lengths to come up with great genealogy products. We think this family reunion idea was just the ticket. Keep in mind that this is not photo paper, but we believe this turned out just fine.

Our cousin charts are very popular, and can go back as far as 4 or 5 generations, and will use the same elegant calligraphy and design shown on the charts displayed on other pages of our web site. Above are just four examples of what previous costumers have designed. They show how you can group each family direct line. Each of these charts was designed for the customers own family, and you may have to design something completely different to accommodate your own family genealogy.

Suggestions to Help With Your Cousin’s Genealogy Chart

Here are some ideas you may want to use: The bottom of the fan chart may say "First Generation, Second Generation, Third Generation", and so on. An alternative is, you can change these around to fit the relationship in your family lines to the organizational chart to say "Father and Mother, Sons and Daughters, Husbands and Wives" after that, then "Grandchildren, Husbands and Wives again, and then Great-Grandchildren". You can have the middle say something like "Our Family Tree" in the center. If you would like to group your family genealogy a different way than just let us know, and we'll see if we can accommodate. Keep in mind that we can change almost anything on this organizational chart. Free pedigree chart if needed.

If this sounds like a great family reunion gift idea using the family group records of your genealogy, than just follow these instructions:

1. You must first purchase a blank fan chart from at the bottom of this webpage, so you can fill the names from your family genealogy records on it. We will send your blank chart right away.

2. Once you have the fan chart then there are two ways to start your cousins chart.

You can type all the names you want from your family group records into a word processor like Microsoft Word. Print the family names on a sheet of paper, and then cut each name out with scissors. Remember that they must be small enough to fit on the fan chart, but big enough for us to read.

If you don't have a word processor you can also use your email and print it out from an email. But if you don’t have access to either one, then take all the family names that are in your genealogy record that you want on the cousin's chart, and handwrite them on a sheet of paper then cut those names out. Remember that they must be small enough to fit on the fan chart, and big enough for us to read. If you pick this second way of writing down your family lines by hand, then keep in mind that we do not guarantee for spelling when we have to read handwritings. You can read more about this on our "Frequently Asked Questions" page.

3. You then place the pieces of paper where you think the names would look best on the chart. This takes a little time and you may have to try different places on the chart for the family names to look right. You may also have to skip a space here or there to get the relationship of each family name or family group, in the places that looks the best. You can work in all the cousins, uncles, aunts, and everyone else that will be at the family reunion. Keep in mind this could be a great gift idea at the reunion, so don’t make one side look better then another side.

4. Once you have organized each family name or family group where you want them, you can either glue or tape each piece of paper onto the fan chart, or you can start writing their names on the fan chart in the correct position by hand. You must print very clearly and small enough to fit the names in each space, but large enough for us to read. If you want other information included with a name just add it now. {We like the glue or tape method the best!!!} This is of course your decision. Keep in mind the rules we have on handwritten names that we mentioned in step 2.

5. Filling in your fan chart this way means we are using it like a pedigree chart. This fan chart will fall under all rules regarding pedigree charts and family genealogy information on fan charts. These rules are for our protection because not everyone writes their names clearly. You can fine these rules on our "Frequently Asked Questions" page of our genealogy site. Free pedigree chart if needed.

6. The black lines that are normally on a fan chart that separate the family names can also be changed. You can cross out or shorten the black lines that may not look like they belong. Just scratch out the parts of the line that you do not like by crossing off that line by an “X”. You can also add a line here or there if necessary or make them bolder. Just use a marker or pen to darken a line to make it bolder. This is for us to see when we create your cousin’s chart. Remember that you can change almost anything on this cousin's organizational chart, which is why it is it makes such a good family reunion idea.

7. One last thing. You should decide whether to have a coat of arms or surname history on your new cousin’s chart {genealogical tree}. You can find examples of fan charts with coat of arms or surname histories on them for comparison on our Samples page. They look beautiful and improve the décor of any room.

8. When you have completed this task, you then mail the cousins chart to us.

9. We would then email or phone you an estimate of what the cost will be to complete your fan chart using the design you created with the family genealogy records that you had.

10. .Once payment is received. We will then make you a new cousin's chart showing the family lines in your new genealogical tree with the names in the same spaces that you have on the original fan under the guidelines we have mentioned on this page and on our "Frequently Asked Questions" page.

It's that easy. Remember that we sell extra copies for only $19.95 in case others in your family or at the family reunion would like one {restrictions apply}. These make a great Birthday Gift or Christmas Gifts, even a Wedding or Anniversary Present.
