Free Family Tree Guide & Search Help
This Free Family Tree Guide was developed to help our visitors with their genealogy search for family names. We have supplied a few links and guide lines that we have found are helpful to Beginners and Intermediate Genealogists. Beginners should scroll down to “Let’s Get Started”.
The quickest way to find more of your family tree is to use other people’s research and then Verify What They Have Found. This can save you many years of genealogy searches in finding the your family lines. It can also save thousands of dollars you'd spend in that time. We want to empahsize again how important it is to Verify what information you find in this manner. You can conduct a genealogy search on the following two main websites. Together you'll have access to well over 1 Billion Names.
Ancestry.com
OneGreatFamily.com
Beginners!! Let’s Get Started
First you will need a way to keep track of your family names. There are two good ways to do this. One way is to use Ancestry.com Free Trial.
Their system will guide and teach you on how to keep your family names online and share with other family members and to search other people’s family trees to see if there is a match to your family tree. Another way is to have a genealogy program for your computer. There are many genealogy programs out there, but we recommend “Family Tree Maker 2008”. We thought it was easy to learn.
Today genealogy programs are a must. Not only do they allow you to share with others by simply emailing the family tree file but they can automatically check for mismatching dates and keep pictures of your ancestors. They even let you know when there is a problem with the family lines you have listed.
If you wish, you can have your family tree saved online. There are a couple of good genealogy websites that have this capability. We found the following to be very easy to use and have over One Billion Names within their records:
Now you are ready to start your family tree. The best place to start is at home. Best of all it’s free. The family tree will start with ”You”. Then you will add your mother and father, then each of their parents {your grandparents}. Most people can get this far without too much problem. Other family members and old family friends can usually get you back at least one more generation. Now comes the fun part, the actual genealogy search to find your family tree.
Over the years we have had many visitors ask our opinion about the best way to“ getting started in finding a family tree” and “where to start their genealogy search online”, so hopefully you will find this free family tree guide helpful in your genealogy search. As we mentioned above, using another genealogist's work can be very beneficial, but you will need to ”Verify their work” or you may find that you will end up having an enormous amount of work to correct in someone else’s mistakes.
